Cheap Banner Myth         Banner Installation      Materials

Vinyl banners are a low cost form of indoor/outdoor advertising.  Vinyl banners have many applications. Since they are portable and flexible, they are often used for promotions, special events or temporary situations.

The most commonly used material

How are they made???

There are 2 basic components, the substrate and the application.

The substrate or banner material is a heavy weight vinyl sheet, usually made of PVC. The weights differ and range from as light as 9 ounces to as heavy as 22 ounces per square yard.  Lighter weight materials are for indoor use, heavier material are for outdoor use.  The material may be single or double-sided. There may be an opaque membrane sandwiched in the material to prevent light from passing through.  Grommets may be added in order to help when mounting/hanging the banner. Grommets are brass or nickel holes protectors that allow banners to be mounted on posts, walls, fences, buildings, etc... Webbing or ropes may also be sewn into the hems at the corners.

The application is the material (and the method) used to apply the graphic and/or lettering.  There are 4 standard types of application.  Below they are listed in the order most commonly used today.  No one application method is best.  This would depend upon the use, graphic, size and quantity of the project.

  • Digitally printed banners: printed on Large Format Digital Printers (big inkjet printers) these banners can be full color and photo realistic. The inks may be water based, semi-solvent and solvent. Some inks may be UV-curable to provide better resistance to sunlight and weather.
  • Vinyl lettered banners: A self-adhesive vinyl is cut by a computer-driven vinyl cutter.  The material is then "weeded" (the process of removing the unwanted pieces of the graphic) Then the vinyl is applied onto the substrate in the individual elements (colors).
  • Screenprinted: using screenprinting methods, different colors are laid down one at a time using stencils.
  • Painted: The sign is painted by hand.
